Ask any credible golf instructor and they’ll tell you the quickest way to start shooting lower scores and having more fun is to get better around the greens. And in order to get better around the greens, you need superior feel. That’s why our all-new MG5 wedges are fully forged from soft carbon steel to give you the most feel possible. But that’s not all.

With MG5 wedges, you’ll experience:

  • The superior feel of fully forged construction
  • Increased spin
  • Proven TaylorMade technologies
  • Six different grinds
  • Countless personalization options

We’ve got a lot to talk about, so let’s get right into dissecting why MG5 wedges set themselves apart from the competition.

THERE’S FEEL. THEN THERE’S FORGED FEEL.

Countless hours were spent testing iterations of MG5 wedges with the best players in the world. The one constant we came away with was that, to them, there’s no such thing as a wedge that feels too soft. It’s largely for that reason that for the first time ever, the entire line of MG5 wedges are fully forged from soft carbon steel.

MG5 Wedge Forging Asset

The process starts with a billet of soft carbon steel that’s heated and bent into an L-shape. The piece then goes through a rough forging process where excess material is trimmed away, and the wedge begins to take shape. Next comes precision forging where the cosmetics and the grind begin to form. From there, the grind, face, grooves and hosel are machined to ensure consistency and that each wedge comes out exactly as it was designed. The final steps involve a slew of cosmetic detailing processes to round out the final product.

“Inspired by feedback from Collin Morikawa, we set out to make the best feeling wedge TaylorMade has ever created. The best players will tell you having great feel around the greens is critical to having a confidence in your short game… and to have the best feeling wedge, it needs to be forged.”

MORE SPIN WHERE IT MATTERS MOST

MG5 Saw Milled Grooves

Also new in MG5 wedges is the incorporation of saw-milled grooves. With this technology, we’ve been able to create grooves that come closer to the legal limits of groove geometry. Reengineered with ultra-tight tolerances, steeper walls and sharper radii, these grooves help MG5 deliver more spin than previous MG generations.

MG5 Wedge Spin in Moisture

One of the problems you’ve probably experienced with your wedges in the past is that they lose spin and launch higher in wet conditions. MG5 wedges incorporate a fully RAW face and all-new continuous Spin Tread Technology to help you retain spin and control when moisture gets between the ball and the face. Situated continuously across the face, Spin Treads act like all-season tires on a wet road as they redirect moisture away at impact. With Spin Tread Technology working in concert with the saw-milled grooves and the RAW face, MG5 retains 13% more spin than MG4 in wet conditions. These technologies also maintain a more consistent launch angle between wet and dry conditions.

MORE GRINDS FOR MORE GOLFERS

Another central goal in the creation of MG5 wedges was to make them as inclusive for as many golfers as possible. The line features six grinds, three of which fall into the mid-bounce category that’s optimal for the majority of golfers. Let’s have a closer look at the SB, SC and SX grinds.

And don’t forget to check out the video of TaylorMade’s very own, Dan Grieve, as he shows you how to hit all the shots with MG5 wedges a little further down. . .

MG5 Grind SB

SB GRIND

The SB grind is the most universal in the MG5 lineup. While it’s especially useful for those with steeper swings, it gives a wide variety of golfers plenty of versatility to play in different conditions.

MG5 Grind SC

SC GRIND

The SC grind features the lowest bounce in the MG5 mid-bounce category. This grind is ideal for golfers with shallow angles of attack and that like to be creative, especially off tight, firm lies.

MG5 Grind SX

SX GRIND

For golfers seeking stability in a mid-bounce grind, the SX is a great choice. The pronounced leading-edge bevel keeps the wedge from digging, and the rearward bounce location is perfect for playing short shots in soft or grainy conditions like bermuda or kikuyu.

“For the first time in my career, the MG5 lineup of wedges represents the closest thing to the perfect array of grinds, shapes, feel and spin in one package that I’ve seen in over 45 years.”

Greg Cesario, TaylorMade Wedge Master Craftsman

Now that we’ve taken an in-depth look at the three mid-bounce grinds offered in the MG5 lineup, let’s dive into the three specialty grinds that round out the family.

MG5 Grind HB

HB GRIND

If you’re someone that could use an added layer of forgiveness in your wedges, especially in soft conditions, the HB grind is for you. Its high-bounce design with relief in the heel makes it plenty forgiving, but doesn’t sacrifice versatility.

MG5 Grind LB

LB GRIND

On the opposite side of the spectrum from the HB grind is the LB grind. Its low-bounce design is great for players with the shallowest angles of attack that prioritize precision in their short game. This grind also performs especially well off tight, firm turf.

MG5 Grind TW 1

TW GRIND

The MG5 TW grind has been updated with Tiger’s current wedge preferences which in the 60° loft include increased camber, a new leading edge blend in the sole for added effective bounce, and additional heel relief.

“For my entire career, I’ve been a universal player, and that’s been reflected in my wedge setup. Over the years, I’ve specifically honed in on grind profiles that allow me to execute the shots I need in all different conditions. The MG5 TW grind allows me to do exactly that.”

Check out the video below as TaylorMade’s very own short game guru, Dan Grieve, further explains the six grinds and shows you how to hit all the shots with MG5 wedges.
