On to the weekend at the 2025 RBC Canadian Open

The 2025 RBC Canadian Open at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley’s North Course has delivered an intriguing tournament through the first two rounds. The field is led by Cameron Champ. A slew of Canadians are in contention. Withdrawals and early departures highlight the PGA TOUR stop this week.

Cameron Champ leads the way supported by rounds of 62-68 for a score of -12 thru two rounds. The Sacramento, CA native is a three-time winner on the PGA TOUR. Champ last tasted victory in 2021 at the 3M Open. His results this season have been underwhelming with two top 20 finishes in 5 starts.

Through 36 holes, Champ who lost his PGA TOUR card last year is bogey free. He found his way into the tournament after coming into the week being the 8th alternate. Champ arrived in Caledon, Ontario around 2 am on Wednesday morning. Champ heads into the weekend leading Andrew Putnam and the rest of the field by two strokes.

The withdrawals from this year’s RBC Canadian Open have been tough to ignore. In fact, six PGA TOUR winners have withdrawn from the tournaments. KH Lee withdrew last Saturday which led to American Brandon Matthews getting into the field. Matthews too, withdrew. Michael Kim announced that he was taking the week off before the U.S. Open which made the RBC Canadian Open a casualty by default.

Notable is that with Ben Martin’s withdrawal, David Ford made his PGA TOUR debut. Ford was the top of the 2025 PGA TOUR U class.  Michael Thorbjornsen, Matt Kuchar, Taylor Dickson, and Sahith Theegala also withdrew. So too did Greyson Sigg after his wife went into labour on Wednesday during the pro-am.

Notables like Justin Rose, Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, Max Homa, and newly minted career Grand Slam and Two-Time RBC Canadian Open winner Rory McIlroy left Canada earlier than expected. After failing to make the cut. Also missing the cut was highly-touted PGA TOUR rookie Luke Clanton who was making his PGA TOUR debut in Caledon.

Out of 22 Canadians that were in the field this week a total of 8 find themselves playing this weekend. Six Canadians currently sit inside the top 30. RBC Canadian Open winner Nick Taylor achieved a historic win in 2023. He was the first Canadian to win Canada’s National Championship since Pat Fletcher accomplished the feat in 1954. Taylor finds himself in a tie for third sitting three shots back of the leader.

Also in a tie for third place is little known Canadian Richard T. Lee. Lee a winner on the Asian Tour has been nothing short of a journeyman. It’s been a decade since Lee has tried to play his way onto the PGA TOUR.

Other members of the Canadian contingent playing on the weekend include Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes. Other players are Adam Hadwin, Matthew Anderson, Corey Conners, and Ben Silverman.
