One of my favourite weeks on the golf calendar is when the RBC Canadian Open takes place. It’s not just because I’m a “homer” it’s a tournament that is rich in its illustrious history. Some of its past champions include A “King”, a “Merry Mex”, a “Shark” and a Tiger too. In more recent memory, career grand slam winner Rory McIlroy has also won here on multiple occasions. Ironically enough, a “GOAT” never won the event.

It’s one of the oldest professional golf tournaments on the planet. The 2025 edition of the event will mark the 121st playing of the tournament, Canada’s National Championship. Only the Open Championship and the U.S. are older.
The venue hosting the event is TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Alton, Ontario. Located just north of the GTA or Greater Toronto Area, the facility features three golf courses. The Hoot, Heathlands, and lastly the North Course. The RBC Canadian Open will be contested on the latter of the three.

Having just taken my first trip around the North Course I’m amazed at the changes in topography. There are plenty of elevation changes and the conditions are terrific. The firm and quick fairways will offer plenty of roll and the greens will be rolling true a quick. If the wind combines with expected warmer temperatures, the tournament committee could make a tough course.
That said, the fairways are quite generous and the rough isn’t overly penal. While areas around the bunkers do have fescue, the primary rough is very reasonable. The winner of the 121st playing of Canada’s national open will be the player who strikes their second shots best. They also need to have a great week on the greens.

I look for a low score to win this week. Don’t be surprised if the winning score is in the -25 range.
