At this time every year, the golf industry collectively saturates the golf public with “Season Opener” golf products. Everything from golf apparel to golf shoes to golf grips and shafts sees special edition versions of their everyday production wares.
Obviously, there’s a market for it because Bridgestone Golf had no issue selling out of their Peach Reserve Collection Putter Kit Collaboration with Hanna Golf (pictured above). Otherwise, time, energy, and resources wouldn’t be spent on something that could be misconstrued as frivolous. Or is it frivolous? After all, what’s the saying? One person’s junk is another person’s treasure?

The question that I have floating around in my head is, “Who are the target consumers of these goods?” Because you know that it isn’t the players.
To celebrate the Major tournaments, golf equipment manufacturers create slick graphic designs commemorating these events. The respective tour staff and their caddies grace the fairways displaying these creations . While they don’t generate revenue in this manner, there is money to be made.
Many questions come to mind. Who are the golfers that purchase this type of gear, and to what end? Are they golfers who actually use these limited run goods? Or are they collectors thinking of them as investment? The Masters “Season Opener” goods are undoubtedly the biggest player’s in this genre of the golf industry.

The understanding is there, that, sometimes investments take time to reap the rewards. But, are they worth the extra money that it costs to purchase over a production run model? For example, let’s look at the L.A.B. Putters OZ.1i. The production run costs $499 USD (non-custom). For the L.A.B. LIMITED it’s more than triple the cost of the production run at $1750 USD.
Not all goods under this umbrella have an exorbitant price attached to them over their production run cousin’s. Take, for example, the ASICS Limited Edition JAPAN S™ Golf Shoe. A pair of these golf shoes (pictured below) costs $99.99 like their production-run counterparts.

These commemorative goods are a real niche market and there’s some eye-popping products out there. If you’re a purchaser of these goods do you actually use these products? I’d love to know because I’ve never seen any of these products on the golf course.
Perhaps I have a hard time understanding because of my practical thinking and very modest… means.
