Size matters… But not in a way that you may be thinking. So, if your minds went to the gutter, relax because this is not one of those kinds of websites. then again, if it were imagine the clicks but I digress.

All kidding aside though as we. all know there are exceptions to every rule. While there are guidelines that every club-fitter in the world uses, sometimes you have to go away from the norm. Especially for those of you that may be a golfer with a little more life experience than others.

Yes, you might wear a Cadet Medium-Large on your hand so a Standard-sized grip is the recommended size. Just for the Hell of it you might work it up a little bit with a couple of wraps. Maybe not in the way that Bubba Watson does (Bubba employs 12 wraps under his bottom hand).

Seriously, that’s it?! My clenched fist.

But you have physiological impairments that effects your hands. It could be arthritis or diabetic peripheral neuropathy. In my case, I have both and I’m unable to make a fist as seen below.

My knuckles are wonky from arthritis.

If you were to go by the “book” I’m one of those individuals that needs that needs a Standard grip. However, physically speaking I can’t. When I do, the results are generally awful. My hands are tight and so too are my arms. My misses are either…

  • Thin. Because my hands are so tight from pain and stiffness the hands – bottom hand in particular – overtakes the swing.
  • Because of the inability to make a fist the club isn’t secure in the swing. The improper grip leads to twisting at impact. When this happens the miss can be left or right. Not to mention the loss of distance.
  • Tight hands leads to tight arms and a loss of clubhead speed.

So, go bigger. Experiment. In my case it’s been a progression. I tried mid-sized and it worked out well. However, because of changes to my body I went bigger because of a review opportunity. It’s the JumboMax Golf JMX Zen Lite that I’m now using and my hands are so relaxed. Even my misses coming back are less frequent than the “others”. That review will be coming soon.

Always remember do what you think is best for you.
